The Exchange Club of Springfield, Ohio presented the 2025 Book of Golden Deeds award to Mike and Mary Hanlon, nominated by Fred Stegner of the Soup Kitchen, at a Banquet in their honor Tuesday evening April 1st, 2025. Chair Alan Peczkowski introduced the couple who have worked tirelessly and without recognition for many years serving those in need. The nomination read:
“The Dynamic Duo of Mike and Mary Hanlon have been volunteering in Springfield for over two decades. For the past 15 years, this team of octogenarians has been a fixture at the Springfield Soup Kitchen cooking meals on Monday and Wednesday. But they haven’t stopped there; mopping, scrubbing, cleaning restrooms, the kitchen and the dining area are all in their wheelhouse. Mike’s handyman abilities have saved the Kitchen thousands of dollars. In addition to the Soup Kitchen, these two are an integral part at the United Senior Services Center. In their ‘free time’ they help with the cleaning of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.”
Congratulations to Mary and Mike Hanlon!
The National Exchange Club’s longest running project, the Book of Golden Deeds Award recognizes dedicated volunteers who give endless hours of their time and talents toward making their communities better places to live. Ever since the Exchange Club of Huntington, Ind., sponsored the first award in 1919, thousands of unsung heroes and heroines have been recognized. The Book of Golden Deeds Award exemplifies The National Exchange Club’s beliefs.
