The Exchange Club of Springfield welcomed Deputies Joshua A. Berner and Shaun Lisle at the regularly scheduled Tuesday August 15, 2017 noon meeting on the campus of Wittenberg University. Deputies Berner and Lisle are D.A.R.E. trained and responsible for teaching Clark County youth about the dangers of illegal drug use.
D.A.R.E. is an acronym for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and the program began in Los Angeles, CA. The Clark County Sheriff’s office began this program in 1988. The Deputies teach in 15 county elementary schools and seven high schools with about 1600 students per year.
D.A.R.E Deputies also are responsible for Safety Village in the summer, teaching kids preparing to enter kindergarten about street safety. Safety Village is in three locations, Miami View, Park Layne and Northridge. They do 6 sessions, and they had 134 graduates this year of 4-6 year olds. They are in 6 school districts, 22 buildings serving 2367 students (5th ,7th and high school) including 934 graduates in 2016 of 5th graders.
